(dis)Connection – photography exhibition

Today, 4th April 2018 at 18h, come to the opening of (dis)Connection contest exhibition, gallery Čubrilo at Gardoš tower in Zemunu

Photo Contest (dis)Connection is an inaugural part of the “Pametni Prostor” (Smart Space) program, which primarily aims to raise the level of awareness of the users of public space regarding the inclusive and efficient use of space that is a public good.

The theme of the competition is to visualize the photograph through visual media – to ask questions to which the public sphere belongs, who are users of the public space and whether some groups are missing (persons of a certain gender, persons of a certain age, persons with disabilities, etc.), as different groups of citizens use the same space and how does the use of public space change in relation to the seasons or the day?

Over 200 photographs were received, 40 of them were selected for the exhibition. Jelisaveta Blagojević, professor of philosophy at the Department for Political Critical Studies, FMK, Maja Lalić, architect and urban planners, and Zarko Culić, photographer at magazine Portret, chose works for the exhibition, and the first three works selected by the jury as the highest grade will be given recognition during the opening of the exhibition.

Gran Via – Luis Camacho Peral exhibition

Gran Via, Luis Camacho Peral exhibition, tonight at 19h in Instituto Cervantes de Belgrado, Čika Ljubina 19

RESONANCIAS URBANAS: MADRID, CALLE LEGANITOS

The centenary Gran Vía is one of the main arteries of the city of Madrid and one of its most emblematic avenues. Its creation, between 1910 and 1931, marked the beginning of the modernization of the city with the construction of the first skyscrapers in the country and the incursion of the architectural currents of the moment.

The photographs that make up this exhibition constitute remnants of life that compress space, time and memory in the form of a snapshot. They are day-to-day images taken from the fugacity and that explore the dynamic intersection between the subject and time, the real and the surreal, in street scenes disarticulated adrift.

Luis Camacho was born in Madrid in 1972. He is a member of the documentary photography collective Calle 35 and founder of the Villaverde Photographic Association. In his work as a photojournalist he has published in the majority of print media in Spain and has received awards such as FotoCam Comunidad de Madrid in 2013 with the image entitled ‘Madrid is light’, which is part of this exhibition.

The exhibition, which will be open until June 20, is part of the Belgrade Photo Month program.

An Aspect of Contemporary Photobooks from Turkey – FUAM Limited Edition Photobook Exhibition

Tonight at 18h, “An Aspect of Contemporary Photobooks from Turkey”, FUAM Limited Edition Photobooks exhibition, in Belgrade University Library, Bulevar kralja Aleksandra 71.

Why do we need photobooks ?
“verba volant scripta manent”
Tuna Uysal

Why do humans need books? Why are they constantly in the act of recording what is said or witnessed? What is the pursuit of keeping records? Various answers can be given to all these questions. To be permanent, to be immortal, to transfer knowledge, to warn, to satisfy the needs of belonging/possession… etc.

Recognizing the importance of recording, human consciousness is rapidly focusing on different recording methods and their displays. Every symbol and code system that has been recognized as communicative power has been used efficiently and studies have always been made to develop a different communication system. Photography has taken its place in all of these communicative symbol indexes from the moment of its discovery up until today. As Willem Flusser said; “In the past, texts were describing images, and now, conversely, photographs visualize newspaper articles”. Therefore, as much as photography is art, it is also a form of communication, which reveals its narrative power. Why would not a form of communication that has narrative power be a book? “Photography has turned into a visual language, and we are now talking with images eminently”.

How can photography, which is exhibited on the walls as a singular object by galleries or magazines of the modern age, take up the form of a book, even though the communication phenomenon regards photography as a language? This can be answered with a statement by Quentin Bajac, curator of photography department of MOMA; “The photo is not hung on the wall anymore. The book form constitutes the basis of the photo. We should be aware of this and cooperate with museum libraries. Our surroundings are filled with many examples that consist of this form and we need to collect them”.

“FUAM” (Photography Practice and Research Centre) aimed to respond to the “PHOTOBOOK” phenomenon, which directs the forms of production and sharing in the art world. The artists had the opportunity to work with and present their own photographs to the outstanding artists of the photobook world such as Ania Nalecka, Rafal Milach, Nico Baumgarten, Michela Palermo, Matthieu Charon, Remi Faucheux, Marcus Schaden, Frederic Lezmi, Calin Kruse, Valentina Abenovelli and Alex Bochetto. The photobook as one of the basic forms of photography is of great importance in terms of being the main project of FUAM. The first goals of this project were to focus on the production of photobooks, which have become a rising value in the last few years, in an academic setting, to bring various artists to the art world through new productions and to establish a center for gathering this accumulation.

Ocurrencia – photography exhibition by Valérie de Marotte Boned

Tonight 2nd April 2018, photography exhibition Ocurrencia by Valérie de Marotte Boned, at 19:30, Бартcелона gallery, Belgrade Design District

Valérie de Morotte Boned was born in Paris in 1967.
From 2008 to 2015 founder and co-director Galeria TAGOMAGO, Barcelona / Paris

From then she participated in different Group and Solo exhibitions, mainly in Paris and Barcelona, and now for first time in Belgrade.

“Each time we strive towards totality, we realize that we lack it. Nothing is ever total. If this is the case, then photographs are proof of the abiding incompleteness of the world; they are the result –the excreta-of a performance by the body heading for unattainable nirvana. Photography is nothing but ourselves and our world”.

Exit – exhibition by Boro Rudić

Exit – exhibition by Boro Rudić, today 2nd April 2018, at 18:30, Galerija Grafički kolektiv, Obilićev venac 27

“Exit” is composed of 40 photographs developed of papers hand-made for this exhibition specifically. Photographs are divided into 4 groups, and entitled Entry, Messages, Exit and Finish.

Prof. dr. Jasna Koteska, text excerpted from the book introduction of “Exit”:

…Rudić’s territory is connected with vectors of abandonment, hence the book’s title is “Exit”. But that is not the abandonment of territory, but rather an entry into a new territory. That’s why his photographs are replete with signs, emissions of signals, rail-tracks, roads, steps, streets, entries, fences, as they are all signals intended for seekers. The main objective of these signals is to be aux aguets, to be on the watch, as they require a good eye. Rudić’s camera does not capture in panic, but instead he captures wrinkles of landscapes, lines of rocks, as a revelation of a new spacial syntax. Photographs from “Exit” do not portray the culture, but certain spectral dimension of reality, like Van Gogh’s yellow sky or yellow fields, or like Munch’s hay. This does not mean that Rudić is traipsing into other art form, i.e. painting. He remains in photography, yet is simultaneously out if it with one foot, striding into painting….

New Talents – Instagram – BPM 2018 Opening

Tonight, 29th March 2018 at 19h, in UK Parobrod 2 exhibitions – New Talents 2018 and Instagram 2018. Come, you will have the opportunity to see and enjoy these projects.

For 18 years, we have been living in the 21st century. Many things have happened, many things have changed and photography, perhaps, more than any other media, has changed considerably. It has certainly lost its aura of particularity by the mere fact that it is omnipresent. It became important as a word as well, though not as precise as the word itself. Hence we frequently view it in alliance with a text that will explain it, expand or deepen its meaning. In the contemporary practice of visual arts education, text and theory are an inseparable part of practical work. That was also proved by the work of participants in the third “New Talents” competition, most of whom are students of photography. Although each of the photo series represents a narrative, their full meaning and their direction become discernible only by the combination of the image and text. And that is no longer news. However, the way the stories are created still is. They vary from a directed situation, changing of the very form of photography into a 3D object, to fiction, combination of archival material and personal, and ultimately to “classic” reporting. The desire to tell stories has not diminshed compared to 20, 50 or 100 years ago. Inexhaustable human curiosity and the need for fiction compel us to pursue stories, to record them and share them. Yet, their linear narrative was replaced by the intuitive flow in which places, time, actors and subjective impression are all intermingled with the factual one. A dominant atmosphere is not so much due to the artistic component, as it is due to the dramatic effect that is helping us to knit a story into a ball of visual information. Perhaps the medium of photography has become more easy and accessible than ever before, yet the communication between spectators and photography was, and has remained, a field of knowledge in which a story-maker and its spectator participate equally, weaving into it their own experience, sensibility, culture, religious and political attitudes, or simply their own age.
